Our Berlin city baby guide
Berlin is our hometown and therefore not part of our travel route. However, here are some insights for those, who travel Berlin with Baby. There are a lot of Baby & Kids friendly places. If you are not sure where to stay, you should go for Prenzlauer Berg. It is THE baby area. Everyone is pregnant or has a baby or a small child. Therefore, you might think they are leasing them.
First of all, I like the Mauerpark on Sundays, if you are in Berlin with baby. There is a flea market and lots of musicians and entertainers. You should definitely watch the open air karaoke next to the basketball field. The Mauerpark is quite busy and highly frequented by hipsters. However, I enjoyed walking around there with my baby and friends. At the end of the Mauerpark there is an urban gardening area and a small cute birch forest. In addition, you could stay in the baby friendly cafes close to it on the Schwedter Street: Cafe Niesen or Cafe Frau Krüger.
Furthermore, make sure to walk through Oderberger Street. It is a true beauty with coloured old buildings and sweet little cafes and shops.
Moreover, the area around Helmholzplatz with its little cafes and kids shops is nice. Kids House by Kiki has cute clothes. Cafe Mein Kiezkind is nice and surrounded by a nice playground.
If you want to explore Kreuzberg:
The area around Böcklerpark at the Landwehrkanal is nice to relax. Worth to see is the Bergmann Street with a lot of little Cafes and the food market Markheike Markthalle. If you like food markets, I recommend Markthalle Neun. It’s beautiful and tasty. However, try to avoid busy Thursdays and weekends. Moreover, one of the most lovely places are the Prinzessinengärten (Princess gardens). It’s a unique urban farm for organic vegetables in the middle of Kreuzberg. A non-profit organization runs it. You may have a meal or drinks in the outside area.
The “Holzmarkt” is another truly Berlin-style place next to the Spree river. It’s an outdoor cafe & bar with a playground for kids and childish adults. It is a place made out of wood in a DIY manner.
There are plenty of non-cowled parks if you choose the right ones. My favourites are the Schloßpark and the Bürgerpark in Berlin-Pankow or the Treptower Park. But the nicest one is a botanic garden, also used as a park, the Botanischer Volkspark Blankenfelde-Pankow. It is a beautiful and idyllic place. Surprisingly, hardly anyone knows this place.
Finally, for the more adventurous ones: I really like the Teufelsberg. It’s a forest on a hill with an old american listening station on it. On the weekends you can do a guided tour through this abandoned place. You just show up at the gate on top of the hill and the tour starts every 30 minutes. It’s so special because there are a lot of huge street art paintings on the walls. But leave your buggy at home as you will have to climb some stairs.
Berlin with baby city walks:
Unfortunately, Berlin is not consistently beautiful. You might walk a pretty street und suddenly end up in an ugly area. In the map above you will find some nice walks (zoom in and see the pink, green and blue line).
